    •• При переводе этих и других терминов, отражающих реалии управления в американских (и транснациональных) корпорациях, нужно иметь представление об их структуре и особенностях отношений их звеньев. (Я благодарен Гр.Сапову, который обратил мое внимание на то, что эти отношения несколько сложнее, чем привычная для нас система «начальник-подчиненный».) Первый контур управления в компаниях (корпорациях) с акционерной собственностью ( public companies) определяют акционеры – на своем собрании они выбирают Совет директоров (Board of Directors), который избирает из своего числа Председателя (Chairman of the Board). Следующий – административный, реально управляющий «контур» – воплощен в CEO (Chief Executive Officer) и других ответственных руководителях (officers of the company/corporation), которые назначаются Советом управляющих. По смыслу к CEO ближе всего наш термин генеральный директор (возможны также переводы главный административный руководитель, главный исполнительный директор). Сложность заключается в том, что в разных компаниях «вопрос о власти» решается по-разному. Chairman of the Board может быть, например, наследником основателя компании или «ветераном бизнеса», не занимающимся непосредственно повседневными делами компании и не имеющим доступа к ее ресурсам. Тем не менее политическое влияние такого председателя может быть велико – он, например, может инициировать процесс смещения главного исполнительного директора. Но особое могущество приобретает председатель Совета директоров в тех случаях (а они нередки), когда Совет именно его нанимает в качестве CEO. В некоторых случаях на эту должность может быть назначен и President (президент компании), хотя вообще говоря президент - это титул, и основная функция этого лица, как правило, – представительство компании во внешнем мире. Бывает и так, что все три роли выполняет один человек – у него поистине «необъятная власть». В этом и некоторых других случаях становится целесообразным назначить COO – Chief Operating Officer. За отсутствием устоявшегося перевода назовем его главный оперативный директор/руководитель. На плечах этого человека – ответственность за текущую, оперативную деятельность компании. Наконец, CFO – Chief Financial Officer - это, конечно, не главный бухгалтер, но здесь также нет устоявшегося перевода. По-моему, вполне можно сказать главный финансовый директор.
